The Sultan Hasanuddin international airports were built by the Dutch East Indies companies named Kadieng airfield, located about 22 km north of Makassar. Inaugurated on 27 September 1937 marked the first commercial flight from Surabaya by Douglas aircraft types D2/F6 by the KNILM . In 1942 Japan's army renamed the airfield Kadieng with Mandai. In 1945 Dutch East Indies retook over the airfield and build a new foundation to deploy by 4000 romusha.
In 1950 the service at the airport is managed by the departments of public works section of the airfield. In 1955 is managed by directorate general of Civil Aviation as well as changing its name to Hasanuddin airterminal. In 1981 the airport was designated as a pilgrimage embarkation / debarkation . In 1985 Hasanuddin airport changed its name to Hasanuddin Airport. On 30 October 1994, Hasanuddin airport declared as international airports in accordance with the decision of the minister of transportation. Marked by the inaugural flight of Malaysian Airlines System (MAS) from Kuala Lumpur to Makassar and Silk Air from Changi International Airport from Singapore to Makassar. In fact, since 1990 Hasanuddin airport has served for the pilgrimage flight route from Makassar to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
